Excuse me
By: Rahul (April 26th, 2008)In these present times, perhaps the most defensive word used by most people is “excuse me”. People do not do what they have to (and they have an attitude that reflects it too) and then they use these words as a shield to save themselves! These two words are used in every area and aspect of life e.g. for not reaching school or college on time, not reaching office or violating the traffic rules etc and the list is endless. We have excuse(s) for everything!
Why we use these words is because we do not want anyone to blame us for not doing things in the proper way or at the proper time. We want to avoid doing them and then we also want to go scot-free and unrestricted. It only shows our lack of sincerity towards most of the things we do (or we are supposed to do). We take things lightly without even trying to know seriousness or gravity of it.
Now because of our laxity, if something does go too wrong, for that too we try to cook up (or state) excuses! But then aren’t there situations which are very hard to pull out of, situations wherein serious damage has already been done?! Some might have even encountered life and death situations because of their negligence.
Who cares? Who bothers? Life has become cheap. Nobody cares for anything (if I can say that) e.g. without bothering about ramifications, people commit suicide! However, they somehow do the left-behind ones a favor. They do the favor of leaving a note of excuse for their “loved” ones, the ones they forsake and leave to suffer for their excuse of suicide!
We exercise the same kind of excuses and casualness for our spiritual needs too, be it doing the reading, the meditation, the prayer or fellowship. Our excuses often keep us away from these but strangely none pop up when we have to watch a match of cricket! We always have time for that! The culprit is perhaps in our attitude and thinking. The problem is our priorities. We do as per our convenience and desire and not as per the need of the hour!
But I dread to think about what we often forget. What if God, the creator and the judge makes an excuse for us! What will happen then?
Before excuse becomes our habit (if it has not already) turn from it. Removing all laziness and be perfect in doing all the appropriate and needed things in time, in place and in sincerity, without any excuse. God searches our hearts. On the outside, we can make an excuse and escape but God knows our inside.
So no excuses please!
