Global Crisis
By: Geo (October 17th, 2008)This is how the 63rd session of the General Assembly began this year. The Secretary General, as usual, addresses the gathering.
“Mr. President, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen: Welcome to the opening of the general debate of the 63rd session of the General Assembly. It is customary for the Secretary-General, on this occasion, to assess the state of the world and to present our vision for the coming year. We all recognize the perils of our current passage. We face a global financial crisis. A global energy crisis. A global food crisis. Trade talks have collapsed, yet again. We have seen new outbreaks of war and violence, new rhetoric of confrontation. Climate change ever more clearly threatens our planet. We often say that global problems demand global solutions. And yet … Today, we also face a crisis of a different sort. Like these others, it knows no borders. It affects all nations. It complicates all other problems. I refer, here, to a challenge of global leadership.”

As Secretary General Ban Ki-moon started off this way, I was sure that the urgency with which the $700 billion bailout package was being pushed by the Federal Reserve Chief and the Treasury Secretary of the USA was more than just an interim measure. As events have been unfolding in the past several weeks, I suppose by now countless pages on the internet have dealt with every aspect of this global financial crisis.
There is no market that has been spared. Government after government is trying to bail out it’s banks. I just read about the EU discussing a $2.7 trillion bank bailout! How long will the governments bailout? Minister after minister is trying to restore the confidence of the masses. But to no avail. The secondary markets are seeing a free fall. Many fear a depression on its way that is much worse than the world has ever known.

The glare of the western media is on this crisis alone as unemployment of millions stares on the faces of the western world. And it will surely be much worse for the rest of the world. It will be much worse than the 1929 for sure as the world is more well connected than it was then. The glut in the spending propensity of the west is going to create a crater in the menial incomes of the developing or underdeveloped world.
But in the midst of all this we are missing out still on all the other things for which Ban Ki-moon used the word “crisis”. Of course our financial mess is really the greatest concern because apparently, finance is our means to control other things. But we surely are into much more than just a financial crisis. A similar situation in the thirties ended up with the second world war (WWII). What will this lead to?
Ban Ki-moon’s call for a global leadership is not unfounded. The nations will have to get together and fight this. But can that ever happen even as the past few years has only seen increased division among the nations. I have read in the Bible that it will happen. A very powerful leader will emerge in the middle of this mess and he will almost restore this mess as if almost by magic. He will bring in times of peace and prosperity but not for long. He will surely be an answer to the Ban Ki-moon’s assessment but the Bible goes on to tell about what this global leader will do and keep watching this space for more information.
The Bible takes the message forward to terms made famous by Hollywood, like Armageddon but more incredibly the Bible proclaims the second coming of Christ. Believe it or not!

“We need a coordinated global response to reform the global financial system. We are living in unprecedented times and we need unprecedented levels of global coordination,” The Associated Press reported Barroso as saying. “It’s very simple. We swim together or we sink together.”
