Halla Bol!

This August 15th we as a nation will complete 61 years of independence. Independence from British imperialism and a period of exploitation of the country, its resources and therefore its psyche. The Indian Psyche was crushed under the fierce desire of the English empire to colonize the whole world.
The British Empire started its Raj after the Battle of Plassey, in 1757 when the Nawab of Bengal surrendered his dominions to the Company by granting the ‘Diwani’ or the right to collect revenue. The Indian sub continent saw many upheavals since then, violent and non violent, but not much inroad was made till the entry of Mahatma Gandhi.

Gandhi, a stranger to India and its politics, did not enter the struggle with a call for an independent nation but was an opponent of basic discrimination and abusive labour treatment. His satyagrahas were a major shift from the violent movements and an appeal to the conscience of the British, by highlighting the immoral face of the British enactments by the use of non violent civil disobedience. In his own words “civil disobedience is civil breach of unmoral statutory enactments.”
Gandhi’s ability to inspire millions of common people became clear when he used Satyagraha during the anti-Rowlett Act protests in Punjab. The Rowlett Act, also known as the Black Act, vested the Viceroy’s government with extraordinary powers to quell sedition by silencing the press, detaining the political activists without trial, and arresting any individuals suspected of sedition or treason without a warrant.
Today, as a citizen of independent India I am seeing another kind of slavery, which if not addressed will result in a devastating end for all generations. The dominion and Raj of the mind, by thoughts, ideas and arguments which sets itself up against the knowledge of the Truth. The right to decide what is right or wrong and the freedom to stick to it, which seems as if it is there but is not. The imperialistic ideas and ambitions of colonizing the mind, by a few.
We are getting exploited by ideas of those few who have control over the media, government, industry and entertainment. The minds are being led away as slaves of concepts and movements which can be termed as only immoral and unethical. You are seeing in the media mighty proponents of loose living through homosexuality, pre marital affairs and sex, rave partying and use of drugs and alcohol by the rich and the famous. See some of the newspapers and you will find the truth. They are setting the agenda and everybody has to follow it, anybody who opposes is termed as narrow minded and an enemy of liberalistic thinking.

We are seeing our government representatives showing off bundles of money on TV which were used to buy their votes, who got away without being reprimanded by the nation. Corruption at every level, setting examples for the young to use any and every method to achieve their goals, bribing everybody who comes in the way, to keep their mind and mouth shut.
Indian Industry is selling dreams to young people, who are toiling it away in BPO’s, aviation industry, retail and buying their time for peanuts. There is no space and time left for the youth to think about their lives and the wreckage in their homes, when career and goals have been so glorified that anything else that comes in the way needs to be crushed, integrity and ethics have become words of the past. Corporates where manpower is abundant but value for human life is in shortage.
The entertainment industry is selling sleaze and exalting the use of tobacco, drugs, rash driving and porn. The smoking Shahrukh, the speed demon John Abraham and socialite Paris Hilton are youth icons getting more than their fair share of media coverage. Internet and other forms of entertainment are flush with immorality, any desire to protest is crushed with the modern day concepts of existentialism and new age cults and motivation gurus. Life on your own terms and philosophies which help in establishing the new wave of looking inwards and seeking the power within when everything that we see in us and around us shows us a Creator.
2000 years back, Christ came to earth. Born in Israel, a nation ruled by the Roman government, using its people and collecting revenues which broke them financially and morally. But he addressed the moral issue first and was clear that the spiritual kingdom needs to be established first before any earthly kingdom was removed. He like Gandhi did not even propagate a Civil disobedience but said to his people to remain subject to the earthly rulers by paying the taxes when drawing their attention to spiritual dominion of the evil in their hearts. He said ‘Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God’.
HE was the one who showed the way of nonviolence and the way to address the moral issues exemplified by Gandhi and many others who became the founding fathers of great nations. Christ said that ‘If somebody hits you on one cheek, show the other’ also telling us that being freed by the truth that HE brings us is above all types of redemption. Today’s Rowlett Act cannot deny my right to create an opinion, an opportunity for fair trial (listening) and without a logical reasoning (warrant) it cant arrest my belief ,as Christ had suffered all this and more on my behalf when HE died on the cross.
All those who wish to join this struggle can say with me ‘Halla Bol’.

Brilliantly written Navin.
Let me start with a story:
Billy Graham on one occasion told of a meeting he had with German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, at one time mayor of Cologne, imprisoned by Hitler for his opposition to the Nazi regime, and later chancellor of the West German Federal Republic from 1949 to 1963. On this occasion, he looked the evangelist in the eye and said, “Mr. Graham, do you believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead?” Graham, somewhat surprised by the pointedness of the question answered, “Of course I do.” To that confident reply Chancellor Adenauer said, “Mr. Graham, outside of the resurrection of Jesus, I do not know of any other hope for this world.”
I have been gripped by this thought over the past many months. The life and resurrection of Christ not only brings personal salvation to individuals, but outside of Him, there is no hope for all creation. Which is why in Romans 8.21, Paul says that “ALL CREATION” will be liberated (and not just souls of men).
I mention this in response to your post and you mention of how people of the world have been led astray by wrong models and icons and even wrong gods.
I personally believe that we ’sons of God’ are to be held accountable to that, to a large extent. Because, where God has called us to reconcile all creation unto Himself, we have given up most of creation up to the devil, without a fight. As a result, he owns and runs what was rightfully God’s. And we Christians, who are called to take the kingdom of darkness by force, have conceded defeat over creation.
A lot of young people venerate the Shah Rukh Khans and the Lindsay Lohans because we have allowed them to. When God has asked ‘redeem’ and ‘reconcile’ ALL of creation to Himself through His Son, we have failed to do so. And we proudly justify it by saying that those things are “secular”. So far from the truth. God’s mandate to us is to go out and take the Kingdom of Media World BY FORCE for the Kingdom of God. Why should the young person listen only to the barely clad Beyonces and Madonnas? Isn’t one reason because they do not have a morally upright example to follow? Why isn’t there even ONE credible Christian in the Art world? The Music World? The Movie World? Why aren’t movies being made which will promote biblical values through life situations?
Why? Why? Why?
I worry that God will one day ask us that question, He definitely will ask me! Why is the country being run by rogues and criminals? Where are my children who should have taken the first role in running the country? We have declared the “political arena” as “devil’s territory” and we christians will have nothing to do with the Devil. Cowards, all of us! When God had called us to Take the “Political Arena BY FORCE”, to drive out criminals and rogues and to run the Country by God’s laws…
We have failed. Failed miserably. I have no right to blame the young people for going astray. I am responsible for that. I am responsible that the Shah Rukh Khans and the John Abrahams have become gods. I am responsible for putting up Lindsay Lohan and Madonna where they are! I am responsible for hiding my tail between my legs and running the opposite direction when God wanted me to redeem and reconcile ALL CREATION unto Himself.
How long will be keep fooling ourselves? How long?
When will we set ALL CREATION free? Will we? Do we care? Or we are all happy with our free tickets to heaven? As the song says, “I am on my way to heaven, I shall not be moved”!
