Intermediate Beings

By: Santosh (May 5th, 2008)

We have been discussing various social issues in this blog and it has been a good reading. I desire to take on a topic which has not been taken so far and thus I am delving into unchartered area, a different tangent altogether.

Some days ago I came across an article titled “Intermediate Beings”. The title caught my attention because I know we all are “human beings” but what’s this!!! Then I thought it would be related to some mythological character, but read on and find out what’s it all about.

The article cited about Ravana, the demon king who had been granted a boon by Brahma that he would not be killed by any God or Demon or even man! But Rama did kill Ravana, isn’t it?! So technically speaking then, Rama in neither God nor demon nor man! It’s here that the writer brings in the concept of Intermediate beings, and justifies that Vishnu came down to earth and took birth as Rama. Rama was god incarnate in human flesh, which made him neither god nor human being, rather an “Intermediate being”. By doing this, the so called creator Brahma played a ploy with Ravana to have him killed!!

Juxtaposing the polytheistic scenario with this cited incident and the current trend in India, I think I can take the liberty to imagine that all other gods are not very pleased, because Intermediate beings are receiving a much higher and greater status, recognition, acceptance and worship than them in this world!!! Who is higher, a god or an intermediate being? How can gods be pleased with that situation? Or do we really need to reconsider out definition of god?

By the treatment, adoration and following they have mustered, I am forced into thinking that people like Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Jogi Maharaj, Baba Ramdev, Dalai Lama, Satya Sai baba et cetera are “Intermediate Beings” too! In some places in India you can find the filmstars enjoying this status too. They are being elevated to a status of an Intermediate being who acts as a comforter in every walk of life. In one International seminar that I attended, one of the speakers had rechristened his name to Swami Abhidonanda. He has his own website and would not like to be known by his original name, which he announced in front of the whole delegates. And you know what, he was the person who got the maximum applause.

I really have by doubts about whether any of these beings are actually able to change the hearts of their followers. Can they change people’s heart??? Can their principles, matras, theories and workshops bring a paradigm shift in understanding of “the truth”? What are their courses and discourses about? “What to do to become happy and earn more!!!” I really doubt whether they teach about loving other humans as much as their own selves. I don’t think they can tell us the singular purpose of our life.

If these beings truly were impacting people to that level, India would have been a changed nation by now. We have not had a dearth of these beings in the past nor even today. Crime rates should have reduced, rapes should’ve reduced, child abuses should have reduced etc etc. But are we seeing any declining trend in this? NO! Rather we are seeing an alarming increase in the same. And these intermediate beings are not alarmed or moved by these situation, nor doing anything about it but roaming in private Jets and Merc’s and Corollas and hoarding wealth, if not for themselves, for the institutions floated on their behest and/or behalf!

I think man tends to forget that he was made for God and not the other way. People today are pouring gold, silver, diamonds to these “beings” and in turn, they are getting what they think to be “Peace of mind”.

I have such a radical and critical view point because, I’ve come across a book and have got an understanding of God which is quite in contrast to what I see around me. This book, “the Bible” gives a different understanding of God and also teaches us the purpose of this small life for which we were so perfectly created. It says that man can meet his perfect destiny not by obeying rules, or laws or by following strict physical disciplines and rituals. Man receives it as “Grace” and this “Grace”, received from God changes the heart.

It’s like when you want to discipline your kid in not doing something, you can, may be upto a certain time, tame him by rules. But imagine if the child’s heart is changed and understands your heart and also the harm of not getting discplined! That’s what Christ(who is not an Intermediate being) teaches.

A law can give a pointer of what should be done and what should not be done. But the law has to be written on the hearts of everybody to take it one level above. For e.g Jesus said if you’re angry with somebody, then you’ve commited murder in your heart against that person. Now that’s a higher plane that He’s talking. Meanwhile what we find around us is all kinds of lawbooks, guidelines, principles to improve one’s life. And then there are so many books! No wonder we have so many views and so many truths! But isn’t truth by definition, unique, objective and absolute? Can there be many truths?

When we observe the state of our moral behaviour, you cannot but agree with prophet Jeremiah when he says, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? I, the LORD, search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve”. (Jer. 17:9,10). In this passage we hear the voice of the Eternal, Infinite, Ultimate Prescriber of all perspectives and laws. I believe that we are accountable to Him for all our moral actions. So whether we take a telescopic view into the distances of the Universe, make microscopic scrutiny of the infinitesimal world of the living cell or observe ’stethoscopically’ our own moral motions, we only come to the inescapable conclusion that there is a Personal God who is the uncaused Cause of all that we can and we cannot see and His character becomes the standard by which we human beings stand judged.

Going by this, its time to look upto the real God and not any Intermediate being.

God bless
