Legacy through the girls!
By: Jisha (May 10th, 2008)Baby girl… What has become of her! No one wants her! Not even the one who gave her birth! Why is this happening?? Just because the nation and the society thinks that “she” is a burden! Burden to be brought up, burden to get married off, and then the burden of taking care of her even after her marriage! Why doesn’t a nation or its people take men and women equally?? It is because we have accepted it that way!? No one wants to break the boundary. Everybody wants to play safe!
When young, I mean not married, people fight for the cause “Save the Girl Child” but what about when it comes to self!? “Are they still able to stand for the cause? No is the answer. Pressurized by the (in law) family, by the society for the want of the boy child to continue their family heritage et cetera, they also give in! What is there in the continuation of the family!? Gandhiji’s heir are here among us….but who cares for them….no one ……!
Who is responsible for this foeticide? The one in form of god’s avatar…our own doctors! They surely are one of the biggest culprits in this, telling the expectant woman the sex of the foetus…ultimately leading to all this. Abortion is as easy as getting Crocin from the medical store. What can be done about the doctors? Nothing. The expectant mother can stop it from happening but what can she do about it, because if she raises a hue and cry about it, she will be asked to leave her husband’s home… and now even if she does, will her parents accept her or will the society that we live in accept her? There are many who stood for the cause and have paid a heavy price.
India itself is referred to as Bharat Mata (Mother India) and all the goddesses they worship are also women but still it is happening that the ones who worship the goddesses kill the same species when born into their house!! What an irony.!!!
Leave alone Hindus, how many Christians do the same when it comes to the issue of girl. The ones who think they serve the real God also think the same way about the girl. What a pity!!! Look at any couple a generation before us. If they have two girls at first then they will try for the third and if it is a boy they will stop having kids! The ones who have girl child as there first one and boy as the second will also stop. Boys are essential to take the family ahead. That is the reason they also quote. What is the difference between this or that faith then? Aren’t we all the same then - Uncivilized selfish killers?
Those who claim to have had the true revelation from God and then also treat the girl child in this manner; do they have the right to serve the true and living God who created women? Jesus, when he was on earth, protected them, cared for them, loved them. Where is the Jesus in them (I am not excluding myself)? They only talk the good news and then when it comes to issues like this, where is God then??! When it comes to their very private lives, where is God? What are the decisions that they take? What is their stand in Lord Jesus to save the girl child? What are they doing to save her?? What about the wife God has given them? What about the mother who gave them birth?? If at one time their grandparents had thought of aborting their mother, when she was in the womb, they would have never existed!
They need to wake up and see the girl child also in the correct spiritual light thru the Word of God. Crucifying the worldly ways of thinking, looking beyond, everyone need to stand up for the cause from within their homes and allow this river to flow out.
If we want a healing in this land let us who bear God’s name begin the good work. What day better than the Mother’s day (Mothers being the unchallenged representatives of womenhood) to think about making girls the baton bearers. Elevating them from their current status to equality with men in carrying on the legacy and heritage of the families.

Great work jisha! You touched two important aspects for me. Who cares if it is a boy or a girl - times have changed! Keeping the name of the family - which family and who gets to look back and see if family name is preserved or not!
Secondly, you bring that this is not a question of merely another religion, it exists within Christian homes. Sometimes, it helps to start with ourselves and our own community when we want to cleanse a system rather than talking about values in general.
I would challenge the readers to think about how do we judge girls - pretty, fair, educated (enough to handle home and jobs) thin, rich…. all those adjectives create that burden. Female infanticide to the burden of carrying their own burden of being a girl!
