Need for a Worldview

By: Navin (August 2nd, 2011)

Respected President,

The whole world was suspicious about the news of Osama’s death till we officially heard it from your mouth. And why not, this man who has been eluding you for the last decade was best described as a ‘cave man’ and therefore we least expected him ‘in a compound’ at the doorstep of the Pakistani military academy. Mysterious as it might be, the operation that your brave men carried out has put an end to this criminal mastermind who had terrorised millions across the world for far too long. Redeeming Non-science

By: Navin (July 2nd, 2011)

science-redeemed.jpg

Dear Professor,

Despite being a student of science I have some great reservations about what you said during your lecture yesterday. If I can recollect correctly you said that you are a naturalist by heart, one who believes that we can only know what can be scientifically tested. And you base your belief on the fact that since we have made much progress in science over the last 300 years compared to the fields of Arts, Theology or Humanities, it is therefore vastly superior to other ways of knowing.

But the very statement that we can know only that which is scientifically testable is in itself a self refuting statement. No physics, chemistry or biology laboratory in the world can do any kind of experimentation to prove this statement is true. I would like to quote the famous physicist Stephen Hawking from his latest book ‘The Grand Design’. He writes, “Philosophy is dead. It has not kept up with modern developments in science, particularly in physics. As a result scientists have become the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge.” This statement is clearly not a scientific statement rather it is philosophical statement about science. And therefore it is a logical incoherence, as what he claims to be redundant is what he is using to prove his point. Read the rest of this entry »

Leaders: Born or made?

By: Navin (June 15th, 2011)

bornmade-02.jpg

Guys,

I really had a great time at the seminar yesterday on leadership. I never really thought that a few aspiring leaders can get together and throw up some really enlightening thoughts on leadership. In order to sum up what we learnt and for the benefit of those could not make it to the seminar I just want to put it together in the following paragraphs.

Way to the top!

By: Navin (May 17th, 2011)

success-01.jpg

Dear Vinod,

It was such a great joy and relief to know that at last all your hard work is bearing fruit. Especially the MBA results that kept you anxious for the last month, is now out and you are all set to join that dream company that you were waiting for. In a week’s time you will start your career and I am sure that the first day at the office is what you will be thinking about.

I have spent the last thirty years of my life working for a corporate although the work culture and its demands have changed drastically over these last years. So I thought it would be helpful for you to understand a few basics that will help you wade through these waters more smoothly than the rest of your friends.

Aren’t we all corrupt?

By: Navin (April 25th, 2011)

corruption-02.jpg

Dear Countrymen,

Today Anna Hazareji has valiantly led the nation’s tirade against corruption which was fast becoming a cancer within the country’s political and administrative system. Political corruption or the abuse of public power, office or resources by government officials or employees for personal gain was at its lowest levels because more than the money involved, it was beginning to impact the image of the country at the international level.

Just imagine a sports event involving more than fifty countries of the world would have to be embroiled in allegations of gross mismanagement of public funds which could have been better used to project India as a much improved sporting nation leave alone our now lost opportunity to pitch for an Olympic event. If that was not enough the telecom minister putting some of the biggest names in telecommunications through a process of dirty bargaining and lobbying for licenses, red tape and shady dealings had captured the attention of the international media and investors, which is now refusing to fade away from the public memory.

Principal Concern

By: Navin (March 15th, 2011)

Dear Parents,
We have completed this academic year with great results for our board exam students and this is a testimony to the hard work of our students through the year and also the dedication that our teaching faculty has shown over this past year. Our students continue to claim the best scholarships available and our teachers equipped with the best teaching methods and materials are receiving national acclaim.

As our young generation continues to conquer new heights in their professional careers, we are also faced with the new challenges of teaching and building leaders for the future. And to discuss some of these challenges, I was privileged to attend a teacher’s conference held in the national capital with a few members of my staff. And some of the things that came out of this conference could be of great interest to you also. Read the rest of this entry »

Is everybody right?

By: Navin (February 6th, 2011)

Hi Shirley,

I did not want to be an unwelcome guest at your party. I mean the mail that I wrote about your pre-marital relationship but being a college senior I thought I should warn you about the steps that you have already taken. But it seems you have made up your mind and seem to be in no mood to listen to anybody. You asked me ‘not to push my morality on you’ because you feel that everything is a matter of personal choice. You also felt that moral values should not be dictated but rather left to the individual to decide if it’s good for him. Read the rest of this entry »
