A very strange trend, definitely looking like a trend, can now be seen in our land. People are becoming very famous in a day. So much that most people know them and about them in a just one day! Every newspaper and news channel covers them, many times for hours together!

Till that day happens, they move about, almost invisible to society, and many times even to kith and kin. They do umpteen things, but these are hardly noticed or even if they are, they are not worth a news. It doesn’t discourage them, and they go about their narcissistic lives with an almost unswerving dedication till the skeletons tumble out of the closet or the time bomb stops ticking and explodes.

What happens is so startling that people discuss it for days and weeks together! Even the judiciary and the investigators get busy and our sensation thirsty media men are kept on their toes. But most often than not, our subject under discussion is not alive any more to respond to the applause and attention! A case of Posthumous fame!! And even if they are alive, then they are either in hiding or in a place, where a lot of attention is also coming from khaki clad body guards (if we can call them so!) and more famous inmates!

About 3 weeks ago, one more such celebrity producing event took place, though it took as much time for the fame to reach the world. Yes, Neeraj Grover. He never became as famous, though he was the creative head of a production house, but paid such a heavy price, with his carelessness, for this fame. No one could trace him or locate any evidence of him for all this while.

He apparently went to help a girl (its unclear in what all ways). The girl’s (Maria Sushairaj) boyfriend (Jerome Mathew) was furious because he stayed over too long. In fact Jerome was so furious that he took an early morning flight from Kochi to travel 1000 miles to Mumbai, to confront the two apparent flirts.

Altercations, abusing and threatening followed. They fought like two dogs for a bone! Neeraj, true to his filmy background, took a knife to bring things back to control but he perhaps ignored that Jerome had undergone tough training under army connoiseurs. Neeraj was no match for Lieutenant Jerome, and Jerome stabbed him several times (allegedly) and put Neeraj to silence (or fame) forever.

If that was not enough, he meticulously removed every trace of Neeraj’s blood (read the news reports for all the gloomy details). He then allegedly raped Maria! Not once but twice! (Isn’t Jerome unbelievable? Perhaps he already is a hero in many ways to a certain section of the society, yes.) Maria alleges now, that it was a rape! But after the rape, Maria got together with Jerome to cut Neeraj’s body into a 300 pieces! She did it all out of love! To save her boy friend from trouble! They then travelled several miles to dump this mutilated pieces in some forlorn place to burn it.

Then they moved on without a desire to gain fame for their feats. However, it was not to be.

Fame comes often to the unexpecting. Maria and Jerome have together achieved international fame albeit derisive. Neeraj too, but posthumously.

I cannot help but write these things with cynical and satirical undertones. I know that none of the subjects, except perhaps Maria was so much desirous of fame. The men were only in it for some fun or other needs or desires. However, the lifestyles and choices of many a people are precariously balanced between pleasure and “such fame”. Many more such incidents are already in the closet, unknown to the world. Still many more are waiting to happen.

When man decides to live his own course and also concludes that he is the master of his life and he alone needs to stand up and take control of everything in his life, he stands up to a standard, for sure, but a standard that is hollow, putrid and very relative. When two people with such notions and values meet up and confront each other, something like this that happened at Dheeraj Solitaire Apartments at Malad will result.

A Lieutenant in the army, and entrusted with the duty to serve the land, Jerome ultimately ended up serving his own deranged imaginations and confidence. “Maria, was a haughty and easy going girl”, say her old friends, “who was bent on making it big in the movies!” (read more in the news reports) She did make it big in a movie like way, didn’t she? A life that is adorned by many of her lovers and her starry dreams, now will be scrutinized by a million people!

Its important that we align our lives to a common, more acceptable but yet a high standard in life so that everyone gets to live his life within the framework. Alas, its not that such a standard is absent, or unknown, but our wiring doesn’t allow us to bend to it. The basic inclinations are corrupted and more susceptible to rebellion and wanton. Every one wants all the good to happen to him alone!

The first step perhaps is to acknowledge that we need help and the second to seek it and the third to yield when we find it.

There is no way that Amarnath and Nirmala Grover (Neeraj’s parents) can be consoled. They will live with these sordid and gory details of the execution of their son, all their remaining lives. It is so painful, that we who are on the sidelines in this case, cannot comprehend. It will be a grave wound which will never ever heal and like a gangrene will eat into their soul. Atleast for the sake of our dear ones, if would keep our lives in check.

I am ending this blog here with much pain.
