Question your faith!
By: Navin (April 2nd, 2008)How did the whole creation come in to being? This is the question which still divides the American people, which was also the subject of a court room dialogue back in 1925.
The story goes like this, a famous American defense lawyer Clarence Darrow, while defending a school teacher charged for teaching evolution, called William Jennings Brian, the prosecuting attorney and an avowed Biblical scholar, as a defence witness! Then began a series of questions designed to undermine a literalist interpretation of the Bible. From Noah to Jonah, from Moses to Adam …. After initially contending that everything in the Bible should be accepted as it is given there, Brian finally conceded that the words of the Bible should not always be taken literally. In fact, in response to some relentless questioning on the number of days taken for creation, Brian replied that “My impression is that they were periods and not 24 hour days.” This clinched the day for Darrow, as it was assumed that one such ‘period’ could be infact a few hundred million years and it is plausible to assume that a Biblical day could be the same as a huge geological epoch or era , big enough to accommodate all the evolutionary changes required by Darwinism.
While I was a young Christian, I was mindful of the fact that, God expects us to give to everyone who asks from you. So I had decided that every time there was a beggar who extended his arms before me I would make sure that I would not let him go empty handed but give him something. It so happened one day, that standing at a cross road, there was this young boy who came and asked for help and I was more than happy to give , then followed some more people through the day and I was almost oblivious to the fact that my own pocket was empty after a generous day of giving. I realized it only when I put my hand in to the purse to buy something, that I realized, that it was empty. Although it has not deterred me from being a cheerful giver because that is what God expects of me, but from there on my giving has become more matured. Matured because from there on it was never to show others or myself but out of genuine concern for the other and that is the right way to do it.
Why did I tell you this story? Well, the Church has been impoverished by such lavish, out of its means giving over the years gone by, that it’s very standing in the world has been lost. Every other belief system and religion has taken so much away from its core beliefs that, what it could have offered in its originality has been stripped away from it. Although nothing has changed about the God that it professes or the WAY that it proposed, Christianity is today considered as a charity driven, compromising, accommodating and spineless set of people. Well, not all but most of them! Many issues that form its major doctrines, has been surrendered like lambs before the wolves, the shepherd (the church, its leaders) looking on like a mere spectator!
What I would like to ask Mr.Darrow is what are we discussing here, the time taken or the method involved? Speciation of life occurred due to the forces of natural selection is what a Darwinist would fight for and the zealous, persistent and forceful Darwinists seem to have won this argument in this limited space and time. But if for a period I accept the judgement of the court, can I assume that God’s way of creating it by his words and making of man by his hands and breath stands despite having lost the point on time taken? Decide, because what the Darwinist proposes as evolution is exactly opposite to the creation story! Evolution claims it all came by accident and the creation theory says that it is all a part of a careful design! Both things cannot be true and there cannot be a middle way!
Darwin said that “If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down.” What I would like to ask is “If it is demonstrated that his theory could not possibly form a complex organ, would the Darwin believers take that as a scientific test for God.” I would like to rephrase it and say “If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by God, my God theory would absolutely break down.”
The Bible has been one book, which has challenged and provided life’s answers to some brilliant minds across the world. It has never shied away from the constant scrutiny of the ‘critic’. It has been burnt, put down, laughed at, unjustly treated, but it keeps coming back stronger, because this is one book, among so many, which wants us to question it, scrutinize it and lets our logical thinking be satiated with the undeniable truths that it offers. I would encourage you to question it and that is exactly why I am writing this.
The true seeker will put his trust on it after his ‘genuine doubts’ are cleared, because there are many who don’t have an intention to seek the truth, they are just trying to find some ways to justify their ‘wicked thoughts’.
The Bible deserves people who can stand up for it and speak up! Somebody who can stand shoulder to shoulder with the authenticity of this great book (Great God). God says ‘my people perish for the lack of knowledge’, Brian failed probably because he had not questioned his faith enough. Christian living is a daily walk and you have to go through it, which includes doubts, critics and enemies on the way!
