Sow with Tears!
By: GeoA recent survey done in Britain found that two thirds of adults believe that the moral values of young people have declined considerably since the time when they were young. According to most of them, the rise of the celebrity culture and weakening family bonds are undermining traditional moral values among young people! Who is to blame? Are these adults listening to their own conclusions? Or its everybody else that is wrong!
We cannot do much about the celebrity culture, can we? But weakening family bonds? But it seems, the society is not too eager to do much on that front either! Bonding with kids means investment. Investing time and also infusing values.
It’s a very bad world out there. It’s pretty much difficult to barely survive! When do we find time and opportunity to care about values, much less, pass it on to the kids! Who has time to intervene in the kids’ lives and help them navigate the challenges of modern day life? They will find their way.
Now, even if the parents do plan and find a time for their kids, the hitch is that the kids won’t ‘buy in’ the standards and values and all their intentions just like that. They want to see it for themselves, lived out before them! I mean, they are surely looking for ‘role models’. And now who has time for all that!!
So most people go for the easier way out. That’s to criticise. Criticise their behavior, their approach, their habits, their choice of friends, their career decisions. It’s so much easier to criticise . But you know what! This sure is one of the parental functions that most parents don’t want to give up.
The end result. The young ones are diconnecting not only from their families, but also from their communities and the wider society!
I have a hunch that they will blame some gene for this ’seeming’ malfunction too. They will locate it on some chromosome, and this gene would allegedly be guilty of releasing a hormone that makes people criticise others!
I will not be surprised if that happens. But what will be the solution in any case. Mutation?
It’s important to keep remembering that we will only ‘reap what we sow’. And that law applies to all things in life. Yes, this life and beyond.
The Bible says, “They that sow with tears, shall reap with joyful shouting!” Can we take it as a hint. If this is true, will it not be wise to think about that verse conversely too?
