U Turn

Samir, are you there? Whenever you read my message, give me a call. Switch on the TV and look at the news. All of them are covering it. They say that the police and the media are still trying to figure out, who is the culprit.

My whole house is glued to the TV set and it is giving me nervous moments. Do you even remember what we did last night? How will you, you were so drunk, that I had to drag you out of the party and hurl you in to my car. Yesterday, it all started when you had more than your normal intake of alcohol. You got in to a fight with a guy on the dance floor. His group of friends charged on you and then what followed was total chaos.

We ended up beating those guys and in the fit of rage you took one of the bottles at the bar shop, broke it and stabbed it in to one of them. You realized what you had done too late. The hotel authorities called for the local police and I had to drag you out of there. You were so drunk, that I had literally pulled you out. While we were just leaving the hotel, I saw sirens going off on police cars and they were coming in our direction.

I had to do something fast. I just stamped the accelerator to start off one of the craziest drives that I have ever made. We had done many till now, the midnight race, street drags but this one was different. We were playing with the law. I never thought such a nice evening would end up in such a disaster. To avoid being chased by the police I drove through some of the lanes which is normally not used. But I didn’t know what to do, I had to somehow take you home.

Well, I was going at break neck speed. We swerved and jumped over every obstacle. We hit a few vehicles on the road. But the scariest part was yet to come. I was on the Ring Road when I saw a few police vans on the way. We were already drunk and running from the police. I just took a sudden turn, a U turn but I was going so fast that I could not help myself from driving over the footpath.

To my utter horror, there were people sleeping on the road. But I could not stop. I could hear the cries of people, women, and children. One of them I can’t forget, I saw his face. He leaped on me and hung on to the window glass. I just rammed the car in to the railing, I saw him in the rear view mirror lying unconscious on the road.

By this time, my mind was not working. I somehow sped through another route, somehow managed to get you home. I could not go home as my car was all damaged and my tyres had blood on it. I went and hid it in an old garage, on the outskirts of the city. I reached home at 5 in the morning.

I could not sleep and I was wide awake when my parents got up. They felt something was wrong with me but I just changed the topic. This incident is all over the media. They say that they interviewed some of the party goers and they are trying to track us down.

I have to tell my parents, there is no option. Even if I run away from the city, they will track us down and harass my family. I think we just took it too lightly and took it too far. I guess it’s time to stand on your feet and be accountable. Time to take a U Turn in life.

Neil.
