An Intolerant New Generation!
By: Santosh (April 8th, 2008)In today’s Deccan Chronicle’s Chennai edition I read a very sad article about an eight year old girl, who killed herself by setting herself on fire for a meagre reason that her teacher checked her school bag in suspicion of theft. The girl was an excellent student and felt humiliated by the very act of checking her bag in front of the whole class.
For a moment i was thinking that their could have been many such instances which never got reported first and their could have been many such girls and boys who could be doing something very frightening to themselves just ‘coz they have been humiliated by something. The reason could be as small as loosing the first rank by one mark, avoidance by their friends, parents pressure to perform etc. The list will be too long.
Come January to March every year and you could read many such incident ‘coz of exam pressures that these kids do just to save themselves of the humiliation, so that they don’t have to face the world and its people anymore.
The human ego and pride has puffed up to such an extent that we can not tolerate something as “peanut” a reason as people avoiding us.
But what about these kids??? Why are they commiting suicide, when they don’t even know what death is all about. One of the reasons could be that the parents want to fulfill their dreams thru them. They put so much pressure on these little ones from a very early age that it gets imbibed in their basic software. And when they grow up these kids can not take anything at them, to an extent that they can not even take their parents shouting at them who once taught them the winning formula to live in this world.
I was watching some episodes of a Children’s dance & song competion in a famous TV channel, which the media was inspired to do to bring out the talent in them!!!. I could see the air of competition, fighting spirit, the attitudes of winning, and the pressure from their fans to such an extent that every participant wanted to win by stamping down their counterparts. I don’t say that singing is bad, but we always need to see the context in which the thing is done.
These little ones where so inspired by the hindi movies that they knew each and every dance steps of their favourite actors and actresses’ and to such an extent that when they make a wrong step they openly say like what one of the kids said, “the movement of my pelvic was not smooth and consistent.”
The media, the parents, friends and relatives have put so much of pressure on them that they also want to win at any cost and yes they can not tolerate if somebody comes too close to snatch that award.
Today TV has become a necessity and parents are busy making their career. In all these our kids are mentored by media. One day I asked one of my friends about his kids. He was quick to say.. “I’m in software, my wife’s in hardware and my Kids are Nowhere!”.
Every kid has a TV watching time but have we ever bothered, what they watch or rather what we should let them watch?
Knowingly we are letting the media mentor them. And God forbid if anything goes wrong like that of the girl in chennai we will be left blank and by that time it will be too late. I don’t say that their are only bad things in the TV but we as a parent should know what to let them watch and when.
Many of my friends I know have decided that they won’t buy a TV at their home till kids are of certain age.
Its very important that we expose our kids to a differnet media so that they don’t do something like the little girl did. The media of God. Today’s parent might be feeling that where will the kids learn new things? I want to ask one question to you. Would you like to give your kids a chocolate that is sweet from outside, but bitter from inside OR would you like to give one which is sweet from outside and when they take a bite there’s this sweet jelly which just flows like honey into their mouth?
The media of God is like the latter and let me tell you, only God can give us perpetual novelty rest all things in this world are like the bitter chocolate.
Let’s make our kids grow in God and his works rather than Kareena’s & Saif Ali khan’s work where they are more concerned about the pelvic movements and biceps respectively. Let’s teach our kids that life’s most important things don’t come out of the idiot box but it comes out from an eternal God.
I’ve found somebody who was tolerant to his enemies even when they put him to the cross for all the wrong reasons. His name is “Jesus” and I firmly believe that only he can take my kids thru the tough times that are coming ahead so that they don’t do anything that the little girl did and pay with her life.
God bless!
