A Word on Words

In the general sense a word signifies an utterance of the mouth, or a speech; and as a speech is a thought of the mind uttered by means of words, therefore a word signifies the thing that is being thought; and from this, in the original tongue, everything that really exists, and is any thing, is called a word. But in an eminent sense the Word is Divine truth, for the reason that everything which really exists, and which is anything, is from Divine truth.

We are tempted by words, expressions which we read, advertisements which we see, actions which are converted to words in our mind……  In everything we do there is a word or group of words. We utter words which encourages others, build others confidence, bless others, entertain others, give life to the burdened soul, save others by telling the truth…….. We speak words condemning others, that demeans others, that lies about others, that make others feel disgusted, that is gossip, pulling others down in front of people…..

Doesn’t our tongue which spells out words fit in those three sentences perfectly? We are like chameleons depending on the circumstances and situations.

Writes a Holy man of letters 2000 years ago

“…….Curses and blessings out of the same mouth!
………How can a fountain of water give out both salt water and fresh water?????”

If then how can our tongue both speak derogatory words and speak words of blessing? How many times we have uttered some word to someone without thinking. We realize a split second latter about the inappropriateness and regret the whole day.

We can also by saying “words” build others up and build us as well. Words of love… during a difficult time. Words of silence… in sorrow. Words of life… when there is despair. Words of truth… when someone is struggling with their conscience.  Words of comfort… where there is pain. Words of compassion… where there is grief. Words of encouragement… where there is failure. Words of gentleness… where there is harshness. Words of peace… where there is strife. Words of hope… where there is darkness. Words of enlightment… where there is ignorance. Words of contentment… where there is want. Words of healing…. where there is sickness.

“…..The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life”

The right word at the right time is like a custom-made piece of jewelry, and a wise friend’s timely reprimand is like a gold ring slipped on your finger.”

Can we ponder on the power of the words we speak……?
